"If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." —Matthew 16:24

The central mystery of Christianity is the Incarnation, that God became Man, but this ineffable truth only reaches its fulfilment and value in the Passion and Death of the Christ. The God-Man, utterly blameless and perfect, took upon Himself to experience and become all the effects of evil unleashed by the sinful disobedience of mankind. The Lord's self-sacrifice was not out of vanity or a desire to prove a point; there was not one bit of self-regard in His self-oblation. Rather, He intended only to provide the healing path for all men to follow, to learn to suffer and, yes, even to die, out of love.

The Passion of Christ is thus for us the school of sanctity; it is the foundation of all sacramental life, the foundation of the Church, and the foundation of the entire spiritual life. No one knows this better than the Passionist Order, of whom Fr. Ignatius Carsidoni of the Side of Jesus, the author of The School of Jesus Crucified: The Lessons of Calvary in Daily Catholic Life, was a member. Take heed from the lessons of this great exponent of the Passionists' charism of proclaiming suffering united with Christ as the entirety of the Christian life.

In this book are 31 meditations on different aspects of the Lord's Suffering and Death. Each has 3 points, followed by a holy resolution to be taken and an example from the life of a Saint. Also included are meditations and prayers on the Five Holy Wounds of Christ, Visits to a Crucifix, Mary Queen of Dolors, the Holy Mass, and more. Here is all you need to become a cross-bearing follower of the Lord.

Fr. Ignatius Carsidoni of the Side of Jesus lived between 1801 and 1844. A Passionist Father, he worked strenuously with fellow Passionist Blessed Dominic Barberi to aid in the reversion of England from Protestantism. The two, along with others, worked to regrow Catholicism in 19th-Century England, instating the Passionist Order there in 1842. Do not miss the opportunity to grow in sanctity and from learning at the school of Christ crucified through the pen of Fr. Ignatius.

    And Him Crucified

St. Paul advises us to contemplate Jesus the Christ and Him crucified. This book is an excellent way to gain that most wonderful focus.

Wonderful devotional book for any time of the year

Posted by Christopher on Jun 6th 2022

While this book is good for lent it is also very good for any time of the year. It contains wonderful morning prayers, a practical rule of life for Christians, and 31 days of 3 meditations per day as well as the fruit to be derived from each meditation and an example from the lives of the saints. In addition to this it has a method for devoutly assisting at Holy Mass (which works well in the Latin Mass but is not really possible in the Novus Ordo), a wonderful guide for going to confession (which includes instructions, motives for contrition, and various prayers), and very beautiful prayers for before and after Holy Communion. It also has the stations of the cross and some other devotionals. The entirety of this book has a focus on devotion to our Crucified Lord and is extremely profitable for leaving sin and growing in sanctity. Overall I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to grow in love for Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as overcome any sins they struggle with. I hope TAN releases a leatherbound of this book as that would be really great. This has quickly become one of my favorite books.

    A Classic of Passionist Spirituality

Posted by Daniel C. on May 16th 2022

This book is a real treasure. I have a devotion to Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin who introduced me to Passionist spirituality. I bought several copies to give to friends. The Stations of the Cross by St. Leonard of Port Maurice are excellent as well as the prayers for before and after Communion. A must have and great gift for Lent!

    Deep, Beautiful, Insightful

Posted by Jenevra on Apr 28th 2022

I've only read four of the daily meditations so far and this book is already having a very good impact on me and my relationship with Christ. Beautifully and deeply written, there's a lot to think about and I sometimes find myself rereading a day's meditation and deriving new insight. I highly recommend this book for those looking to grow closer to Christ. I was reading in Humility of Heart that it's good to do a lot of spiritual reading, but very good to know a particular book very well, and I think I'll make this one "my book". As the other reviewer said there's a lot of additional stuff, such as prayers, advice to live out a daily devotion to Christ Crucified, the stations of the cross, and more.

    Beautiful, powerful book!

Posted by Kristi I. on Feb 28th 2022

Many (most?) of the saints meditated frequently on Jesus' sufferings. This book will help you do that, too. It has quickly become one of my favorite books. There are 31 powerful, beautiful meditations on the sufferings of Jesus in his Passion. That alone would be enough, but it also has excellent prayers -- for daily use, for before meditations, for receiving communion. It offers guidance for preparing for confession. There is just so much spiritual wisdom in this book! Great impact if you read and pray it regularly.
