Meet the Sisters of the Last Straw, a group of sisters struggling hard to overcome their bad habits. Sister Krumbles forgets everything. Sister Shiny can't stop polishing and cleaning everything. Mother Mercy has a terrible temper. Yet when the misfit nuns band together to form a new order, lessons on tolerance and forgiveness (as well as much hilarity!) ensue. In this installment, new puppy and a nasty neighbor make trouble for the Sisters...and then their new sister-in-training, Kathy, vanishes! Wonderfully illustrated by Sue Gioulis, this series by veteran Catholic novelist Karen Kelly Boyce is sure to please readers of all ages.

Fun with a side of Faith

My 8 and 6 year old daughters love these books. They are very funny and have a lot of personality. Each of the nuns has a Vice and a virtue that they are working on, which leads to most of the funny moments. The characters are all “reject” nuns who start their own order. I would recommend the series to parents and girls between 6-12. Fun with a side of Faith.

Sisters of the Last Straw Volume 2

I recently purchased volume 1 & 2 for my 7-year-old granddaughter. I thought it would be a cute series for her. Nancy Drew with a Sister theme. I am disappointed in the adult themes in the book. The book reads for a young reader (2/3 grade) but the themes are not appropriate for that age. Seven year olds don't need to learn about the struggle to battle additions as with Sr. Lovely as she sneaks off to the basement for her smoking addition, or cursing Sr. Lacey. There are many struggles young children can relate to and learn the same virtues. Instead of cigarettes, Sr. could have a sweet tooth. Instead of cursing, Sr. could say unkind things, or gossip. They could suffer from laziness, not wanting to help with chores or get out of bed in the morning, not respecting authority. It is a shame, the books are a great idea, they just need to be more relatable to the age of the reader. I thought others should be aware of these themes before the purchase the books.
