“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?”

—Job 38:4

The Foundations of Science introduces children to the wonders of the natural world in light of God’s providential care over creation.

Too often we hear messages that science is in conflict with faith, but Pope St. John Paul II wrote that faith and science “each can draw the other into a wider world, a world in which both can flourish.” Foundations seeks to spawn this flourishing in the hearts and minds of young readers, guiding them into a world that will delight their imaginations and inspire awe in the awesome power of God.

This eight-part series covers an extensive scope of scientific studies, from animals and plants, to the galaxies of outer space and the depths of the ocean, to cells and organisms, to the curiosities of chemistry and the marvels of our planet. Still more, it reveals the intricate order found beneath the surface of creation and chronicles many of the Church’s contributions to science throughout history.

Earth: Exploring Our Home sends children out into the far corners of our planet to discover natural wonders, while along the way gaining new insights and understanding about the world in which they live. From the formation of mountain ranges caused by shifting tectonic plates, to the earth’s tilt and our rotation around the sun which gives us the four seasons, from our many-layered atmosphere and the solar energy that permeates it, to a study of weather patterns and climate . . . young explorers will come to appreciate the beauty and intricate order of this fascinating home God has blessed us with.

Did you know . . .

  • the earth travels at a speed of around 67,000 miles per hour on its yearly trip around the sun?
  • a national park in Kentucky holds a cave system that covers over 80 square miles?
  • the earth’s magnetic field is what allows us to navigate by using a compass?
  • our oceans are so vast and deep that there are enormous mountain ranges beneath the sea?
  • the upper most layer of our atmosphere—the exosphere—is over 6,000 miles thick?

In addition, children will also learn about the Holy Spirit coming like fire on the day of Pentecost, and review the many biblical scenes that took place in the desert. They will also be introduced to St. Damian of Molokai, who ministered to the lepers on the islands of Hawaii, and St. Kateri, the patron of the environment, among other saints and members of Christ’s Church who have made vital contributions to science.

Take a journey back to when God laid the foundation of the world with this groundbreaking science curriculum!

    Mrs. Jessica I

I'll give this series (earth) 2 stars for the graphics, visuals and some of the content in the beginning of the book towards the middle. I will also apply these stars, for their use of some of the Saints as it relates to each chapter subject. The lack of stars is a result of this book planting seeds of liberalism/ modernism into a supposedly traditional Catholic science curriculum. I appreciate the topic of global warming, pollution, energy alternatives etc., as our children (students) must learn to love and respect the home God gave us (planet earth) AND they should learn some of the liberal and modernistic arguments made today, in order that they may learn to combat, refute and articulate their own positions. I do not appreciate a curriculum however, that plants such toxic seeds of modernism and liberalism into children's minds, and presents their false ideologies without presenting the entire argument, all of the facts and an objective presentation so that students can make their own decisions. First, this age range is too young for such logic and reason, rhetoric and refutations. Second, subtle insinuations and passive seeds do nothing more than trick readers into believing the information they are being fed, is accurate and true. This text actually even suggests that cow farts are the reason for increased carbon dioxide into the atmosphere...not joking. This text also makes false claims about the use of alternative energy sources, and their impact on "global warming" which know is false, and which we know would make little if any change at all (credible scientists believe less than 1% change if everyone drove an electric vehicle for example). If you want your child to read subtle indoctrination material, similar to the likes of Greta, or other liberal environmentalist activists... then sure, this would be the appropriate text for you. If you want your child to form a intellectual argument, based on facts, evidence and real studies... then this is not the text for you. There is some excellent information in this text.... but as you progress through the booklet, you will start to see otherwise. I can't think of a more deceptive practice quite frankly. Just as you start to love the curriculum, it changes its' trajectory. This booklet (its more of a catalog magazine style thats quite thin), was reported to several of our homeschool co ops, and umbrella schools, as being a text that should be banned and rejected for any form of credit. Avoid. This isn't science. Furthermore, it is nothing more than reading, and then having your student to some small exercises like fill in the blanks, crosswords, etc. There isn't any real science experiments, ideas, or encouragement here for your student to actually learn science, or complete any STEM related activity that corresponds to the unit. You would be better off using the protestant Apologia series, or, using the focus on elementary science series. All my best. Pax.

We absolutely love the TAN science curriculum. My husband and I are both scientists and we are so impressed with the curriculum. We cannot wait for the others to come out!
