One of the greatest contradictions in the Spiritual Life is that it is very important you should know a great deal about yourself, and at the same time, that you should think very little about yourself.

In A Right View of Yourself, the esteemed Rev. Fr. Frederick Faber will lead you through a journey of self-knowledge. With gentleness, candor and wisdom, he digs deeply into the normal state of a soul, the effects of fatigue, the necessity for spiritual rest, struggles with temptation and scruples and how to view rightly our faults. He provides instruction on how to avoid devilish perils that you may encounter along the way: heightened sensitivity, emotionalism, and worst of all sentimentality.

Throughout his work, he remains consistently optimistic about the divine possibilities self-knowledge can reveal. He prepares you to begin this journey governed by faith, humility and confidence in God’s mercy and love.

No knowledge in the world can be more interesting than to know how you stand with God and A Right View of Yourself will help you see yourself as He does.

Abridged version of Growth in Holiness

Posted by CONNER W. on May 1st 2023

I loved the content but was disappointed to discover it was an abridged version of Growth in Holiness which I already had access to. It would be nice if the listing made that more clear.

    Bite sized wisdom

Posted by Tabbitha P. on May 31st 2022

I think it’s important to have these more concise, bite-sized manuals so that in the busy day-to-day, we can still acquire necessary wisdom and spiritual pointers on the go. I actually carry a few small volumes with me in my purse, because it’s always great to have valuable material to read over a social media feed.

    What a gem!

Posted by Katherine B. on May 26th 2022

This is the book I wish I had read at the beginning of my journey into the spiritual life. The author gives such a comprehensive overview that I felt a bit like a traveler receiving a map from a trusted guide on what to expect on this journey and how to navigate the obstacles. I LOVED this book and recommended it to all my friends! It’s a gem!

    Spiritual poison from 1855

Posted by David K. on Mar 3rd 2021

Here are some gems from this book, written in 1855 with all the breathless blowsiness you'd expect from that period: The spiritual life never includes peace and happiness (pp. 15-16). Not struggling actively with the Devil is a sign that you're already lost (page 17). Spiritual sadness and alienation is worse than mortal sin (pp. 38-40). Temptation strengthens us and give many graces, and those not frequently tempted are shallow, likely to fail in moments of test (pp. 60-63). Being dominated by scruples can be a mortal sin (p. 89). I wonder whose side Fr. Faber was actually on. And what does TAN Books think it's accomplishing by publishing this bilgewater? This review is uncharitably harsh, but I dread the thought of just about anyone, especially a teenager, reading this book.
